3.1 Sachetana Safe Drinking Water Project, Y.N.Hoskete, Pavagada.

About the project

Sachetana project is providing safe and fluoride free drinking water to thecommunity by promoting rainwater harvesting and improved ground wateravailability, sponsored by Government of Karnataka. This is expected tominimize the extent of flurosis in the selected villages. Individual familiesare supported to construct rain water harvesting units of 5000 liter capacityeach. Contribution by the families/community is an important and good practicebeing adopted in this project. The water thus collected is used for drinkingand cooking purpose.

Location

The project is under implementation in 30 flurosis affected villagessituated in and around Y.N. Hoskote hobli, Pavagada taluk, Tumkur District.

Objectives

  • To provide safe and fluoride free drinking water for 4000 families in 26 villages within the project period of four years on sustainable basis.
  • Build the capacities of the families in management and maintenance of the RWH units.

 

Progress

  • Totally 1160 Rain water harvesting (RWH) units were completed
  • Bore well recharge were done in 15
  • Totally 23 farm ponds were dug in the projects
  • Conducted 380 water quality (H2S) tests
  • Training conducted for 248 Gram Panchayat members

 

Impacts

  • Over 84 lakh liters of rain water was harvested and used for drinking.
  • About 5860 people from 1136 households have got safe and fluoride free drinking water.
  • People have expressed relief from joint pains, headache, indigestion and stomach pain after regular drinking of rain water.
  • The project activities have generated over 22720 employment days for the local people.
  • Water quality analysis has helped in creating awareness regarding safe drinking water.

 

3.2 HSBC Sachetana Safe Drinking Water Project.

About the project

Honkong Shanghai Banking Corporation, (HSBC) has supported the Sachetanaproject for providing safe drinking water for the fluorosis affected villagesof Chikkadalavata Gram Panchayat of Madhugiri Taluk,Tumkur District. Thefluoride concentration in the drinking water bore wells in the project villagesranges from 1.6 mg to 2.5 mg per liter. This is above the permissible limit of0.5 mg to 1.5 mg per liter.

Location

The project is under implementation in twelve villages, and scope to expandto other 15-20 villages in Madhugiri and Pavagada talukas of Tumkur district.The project envisages to support 1000 families.

Objectives

  • To ensure the availability of safe drinking water for the population in the project area through rooftop rain water harvesting and improved ground water availability.
  • Create awareness on the importance of safe drinking water and sanitation.
  • Build the capacities of the families in management and maintenance of the RWH units.

 

Progress

  • About 926 families were supported to construct RWH units during the year.
  • Six primary schools in the project villages were supported to construct RWH units.
  • Water quality testing, chlorination of RWH units, recharge of bore wells, training on maintenance of RWH units were the other activities implemented during the year.
  • Totally 54 farm ponds were dug besides recharging of 05 borewells.

 

Impacts

  • Over 40 lakh liters of rain water was harvested and used for drinking.
  • About 4630 people from 926 households have got safe and fluoride free drinking water.
  • There is reduction in the medical expenses and hospital visits.
  • The project activities have generated over 13540 employment days for the local people.
  • Water quality analysis and visit of volunteers from HSBC has helped in creating awareness regarding safe drinking water and sanitation.
